Finland facts
Finland has around 5.5 million inhabitants, and the vast majority of them speak Finnish, although the indigenous Sami language is still the mother tongue of roughly 1,900 people. The blue cross on the Finnish flag represents the thousands of lakes scattered across the country, while the white is for the snow that covers the land in winter. Finland is a republic and gained complete independence from Russia in 1917, later joining the European Union in 1995.
