The Nizwa Souq is among the largest of its kind in the country of Oman

Ancient fortresses, rugged mountains, towering sand dunes and atmospheric souks: Oman is the Arabia you’ve always pictured. What’s more, the Sultanate is much less crowded than its glitzy Gulf state siblings, meaning you can enjoy all that the ‘Pearl of Arabia’ has to offer without the throngs. Factor in blue skies, balmy temperatures and friendly locals, and you have one of the Middle East’s most welcoming destinations. And Cosa can arrange an unforgettable Arabian odyssey for you.

Salalah, in the very southeast corner of the country, is the Sultanate’s greenest place owing to its monsoon season. It’s a land of lush mango groves and frankincense trees.

Oman facts

The oldest independent state in the Arab world, Oman has been ruled by the Omani Al Said family since 1744. It was one of the most isolated countries in Arabia until 1970 when Sultan Qaboos became ruler. The late king was loved in Oman for managing to modernise the country but without turning it into a strip of skyscrapers and shopping malls. Today, Oman is famous for its frankincense, Khanjars (curved daggers) and halwa – a sweet made with saffron, cardamom, rose water and nuts – all of which make excellent souvenirs.
