Footprint in the sand
Corporate Social Responsibility in Turkey
During an event for a software company in Turkey, we chose to tackle a global challenge on a local scale: the impact of humans and technology on the environment, with a particular focus on ocean plastic pollution.
A group of 120 event attendees gathered at a beach near Istanbul for an extensive clean-up, while a smaller group joined renowned author Jess French in the sand to write a children’s book raising awareness of this pressing issue.
Our oceans are home to countless incredible animals and organisms. But in recent years, something else has been found in alarming amounts: plastic. While cleaning beaches is vital, education is the most effective way to prevent plastic from reaching the oceans in the first place. The more we understand how to use and recycle plastic correctly, the less of it ends up in our environment. With our children’s book, we aim to inspire the youngest generation to make better choices than we have so far.
Make the most of your beach cleanup
Let’s talk numbers
In just a few hours, 774 kg of rubbish was collected: 642 kg of plastic, 2 kg of paper, 14 kg of metal, and 46 kg of glass. With 200 pairs of hands working together, the waste was successfully recycled, showcasing the power of teamwork.
Recycling Art Gallery
Why not rethink recycling? During the beach cleanup, participants took on a creative challenge: building sculptures from the rubbish they collected. Each group worked with themes provided by the book’s writers, and the resulting sculptures were featured in the children’s book, seamlessly connecting the two activities. This is how Wasty and his friends were born!
Educational journey
The book created on this beach was later donated to schools across Istanbul and taken home by event attendees from 40 nations, spreading its story around the world. Workshops and online meet-and-greets offer a glimpse into this educational project.
