Spain facts

Spain once ruled over much of the Americas, thanks to Christopher Columbus and his ‘discovery’ of the new world. Today, it’s been reduced to the homeland on the Iberian Peninsula plus the Balearic and Canary Islands. This country of around 47 million people is divided into 17 autonomous regions, such as Catalonia and the Basque Country, with a national capital in Madrid. Since the death of the dictator Franco in 1975, it has been a democracy under a constitutional monarchy.
