Where glitz and glamour
sparkle in the sun

French Riviera, France

The art of celebrating flowers on the Côte d'Azur

Staying in the French Riviera combines culture with a slice of sand and sea, as well as a hefty dose of glitz and glamour. Why not hire a private yacht and sail from St Tropez in style? Or drive the Grand Corniche in a convertible? And, for a break from the shimmering harbours, supersized yachts and (serious) bling, simply head for the hills. Here you’ll find medieval villages with narrow winding streets of traditional stone houses. Oui, there are several sides to France’s favourite summer playground and Cosa can show you them all.

It’s twice as nice in Nice

The iconic History of Promenade des Anglais in Nice

‘If only I were in Nice, I’d get better,’ said Queen Victoria upon her deathbed. And for good reason. France’s fifth-largest city is also one of its most seductive. Stroll down the palm-tree-lined Promenade des Anglais, enjoy the colours of the flower market before getting lost in the labyrinth-like streets of a gorgeous old town.

The enchanting village of Èze on the French Riviera

Perched picturesquely on a rock 400m above sea level, the jewel in Èze’s crown is a 12th-century fortress that featured in Hitchcock’s film To Catch a Thief. We recommend wandering around the Jardin Exotique, where around 400 cacti surround the ruined fortress. But wherever you go, arresting views of the Côte d’Azur come as standard.

Visit Cannes and its treasures

Cannes has come a long way since its days as a tiny fishing village. Today the darling of the French Riviera is famed for its splendid Promenade de la Croisette and eponymous film festival. Star-spotting is a popular pastime but there’s more to this Riviera resort, so come with us to discover offshore islands and the old quarter of Le Suquet.

Exploring the perfumeries in Grasse

Sandwiched between the sea and the mountains, the town of Grasse has been synonymous with perfume since the 16th century when scent was used to mask the odors of the area’s leather products. Enjoy a private tour of celebrated perfume factories such as Parfumerie Fragonard, Molinard and Galimard to learn about the distillation process, before creating your own fragrance.

Essential French Riviera

Try one of the markets on the French Riviera

The French Riviera is also known as Côte d’Azur, a phrase coined by Stephen Liegeard in his 1887 book, where he described the area as ‘a coast of light, of warm breezes, and mysterious balmy forests.’ Other writers and artists – from F. Scott Fitzgerald and Somerset Maugham to Monet and Matisse – followed suit and found inspiration in the Belle Époque architecture, the sparkling Mediterranean Sea and cypress-topped hills.

Cambodia is smaller than its neighbours Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam but despite its compact size, getting around remains an adventure. Roads may have improved in recent years but bus journeys are bumpy – they call it the ‘Cambodian massage’ – so trust Cosa to arrange a private car and English-speaking guide for your trip. We will make sure you experience classic Cambodia, from sunrise over Angkor Wat to the rhythm of rural life among the rice paddies.

Cambodia facts

The kingdom of Cambodia, and its people, have been to hell and back. Two million were killed under Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge, who controlled the country from 1975-79 and their threat remained real until the late 1990s. As a consequence of the Khmer Rouge, approximately 60 percent of the population is under 30 and favour fresh food over fast food. This explains why you won’t find a McDonald’s in Cambodia, a country that has changed its name no fewer than five times.

Experience the charming sights of Krakow's Old Town

Poland is big (larger than Italy or the UK) but largely flat so travelling around is relatively easy. Its size means the weather can vary in different regions – and it can rain anywhere, at any time of year – so our advice is to dress like an onion and pack lots of layers. Polish is the national language (although English is widely spoken in urban areas) and it’s a hard one to learn – owing to its seven-case declension system, complex genders and tricky pronunciations.

Poland facts

Situated in the heart of Europe and bordered by seven countries, Poland has a troubled recent past. The nation regained independence in 1918, only to be invaded in 1939 by Germany and the Soviet Union. Post-war Poland endured five decades as a satellite of Moscow, that only ended in 1989, paving the way for a more hopeful future. Today Poland is a proud member of the EU, and with 38 million inhabitants, it’s the fifth most populous nation in the bloc.

Having a whale of a time

You can spot whales throughout New Zealand

The South Island town of Kaikoura is a delight for wildlife fans, thanks to the migrating whales off the coast. Take to the sea to see these giants.

Although New Zealand is slightly larger than the UK, its population is much smaller, at just over five million (and greatly outnumbered by the 25 million sheep). The reduced number of customers means that national public transport isn’t great so the best way of getting around is by car – remember to drive on the left! A good car ferry service from the capital, Wellington, links the North and South Islands so you can easily explore the whole country.

New Zealand facts

The Maoris settled the islands in the 13th century, with the British arriving almost 600 years later. New Zealand eventually became independent but has kept the British monarch as head of state. Maoris make up around 16% of the population (with the rest mainly of European or Asian origin) and their culture and language can be seen almost everywhere. New Zealanders are colloquially known as kiwis, after the native flightless bird.
