Ethiopia has population of 115 million and is a large ecologically-diverse country. Temperatures in the capital, Addis Ababa, remain a pleasant 20-22°C all year round; however, in the Danakil Depression, they can soar to 50°C. Some parts of the country are at high elevations, which might result in altitude sickness. Let Cosa plan the perfect itinerary to take into account these extremes. We can charter a plane to remoter destinations and provide tips on cultural awareness as you travel round this wonderful country.

Ethiopia facts

The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, formerly known as Abyssinia, lies in the Horn of Africa in the north-eastern corner of the continent. It is landlocked, being surrounded by Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia, Kenya, South Sudan and Sudan. Ethiopia was never formally colonised by Europeans, although it was invaded by Italy. Amharic is the official working language, but over 80 languages are spoken here. The Ethiopian calendar is approximately seven years and three months behind the Gregorian calendar used by most of the world.

A mother polar bear keeps an eye on her two cubs resting in the Norwegian Arctic in Svalbard

The topography of this long mountainous country makes travelling overland a challenge. There are some wonderfully scenic train rides, such as the famous Flam Railway, but the further north you go, the harder it is to get around. The drive between Oslo and Bergen was considerably shortened with the opening of the world’s longest road tunnel, the 24.5km Lærdal Tunnel. Our favourite way to see the rugged coastline is by boat so ask us for details.

Norway facts

At over 1750km long, Norway is easily the longest country in Europe. In fact, Oslo is closer to Zurich than to the northernmost point of Norway. This country of around 5.5 million people is a constitutional monarchy that gained independence from Denmark in 1905. Its oil and gas reserves have made it one of the world’s wealthiest countries, with high life expectancy (and high prices). Norway is a member of NATO but a popular vote in 1994 rejected joining the EU.

The Greeks, Persians, Romans and Ottomans all fought over Istanbul, which was part of the Silk Road, the ancient trade route to the Far East. Once known as Constantinople then Byzantium, Istanbul was the capital of the vast Ottoman Empire. Today it is simply a city of 16 million people, making it the largest city in Europe. And yes, the city centre is on the European side of the Bosphorus, the narrow waterway the connects the Black Sea with the Mediterranean.

German motorways famously have no speed limits but even so we suggest taking your time to explore this varied country. Whether its cities such as Dresden and Munich or regions like the Black Forest or former East Germany, there’s plenty to keep you busy. We love using German trains, which are often an efficient and attractive way to travel, with an extensive network and easy connections. And from the southern mountains to the northern coasts, hiking is always a good option.

Germany facts

For centuries, the most populous country in the EU has played a pivotal role in European history. Yet, modern Germany was only created in 1871, uniting myriad kingdoms and states into one empire. Two world wars (with Nazi rule and Soviet division) later, this country of about 84 million people has finally found peace with itself. Its economy and industry lead the world, although its music hasn’t quite reached the former heights of Bach, Brahms and Beethoven. Just as well the cakes are good.

Trains and buses can get you between destinations in Ireland but to get into the heart and soul of the country, you really have to drive (or be driven). Use the back roads to explore the countryside and coastlines but take your time as roads can be twisty and narrow. Don’t underestimate distances here. Ireland sits in the Gulf Stream, bringing warm water to this beautifully lush land but it also means lots of rain, so remember to pack your wet-weather gear.

Ireland facts

Eire, or the Republic of Ireland, was born as in independent country in 1921 when it broke away from British rule. However, Northern Ireland remained part of the UK, creating a division that has caused problems over the years. The Irish economy was once based on agriculture but the new millennium saw an economic boom that earned Ireland the nickname, ‘The Celtic Tiger’. Ireland is officially neutral but is a member of the EU. Its population is around 5 million and predominantly Catholic.

Portugal facts

Portugal (population: 10 million) shares a land border with Spain but it’s the sea that shaped the country. Many Portuguese explorers set off around the world, conquering places like Brazil or Goa. And Portugal also includes the Atlantic Ocean islands of Madeira and the Azores. Alongside tourism, the pulp and paper industry plays an important part in the national economy. Not forgetting the port wine business: there’s no better way to enjoy Portugal than sipping a glass of port by the sea.
