The Amazon is one of the world’s great rivers and is home to the largest rainforest. After three centuries under Portuguese rule, Brazil gained its independence in 1822. Slavery was abolished in 1888 and the country was declared a republic in 1889. Brazil gets its name from the brazilwood tree.

Argentina facts

In the early 20th century, Argentina was one of the world’s wealthiest countries due to exports of grain and livestock. This wealth can be seen in the elegant avenues and opulent buildings of the capital, Buenos Aires. Argentina was also an important destination for Swiss migration in the 19th and early 20th centuries. A military coup in 1976 overthrew President Isabel Peron but Argentina is now a democracy again. Aconcagua, at 6961m, is the highest mountain in the Americas.

Is this the future: spires of metal and glass rising up out the desert and man-made islands shaped like the world? No, it’s today in Dubai, the largest and loudest city of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Oil money has transformed this sandy country into something like the film set of a sci-fi movie, but there are pockets of traditional charm and artistic pleasure to be found among the futuristic towers, opulent hotels and cavernous mega-malls.

There is limited public transport outside the urban areas so you’ll need a car to get around, although Dubai has a very modern metro. UAE facts

The United Arab Emirates is a federal monarchy made up of seven emirates, each ruled by a sheikh. The country, which is largely desert and borders on the Persian Gulf, was created in 1971, with its capital in Abu Dhabi although Dubai is the largest city. Thanks to huge oil reserves, the UAE is one of the richest countries in the world. Only around 12% of the population of 10 million are Emiratis; the rest are all foreigners.

Landscape views of water colours and tulips

Windmills situated in Kinderdijk in the wetlands near Rotterdam, the Netherlands

Polders, canals, dykes and windmills: this unique infrastructure has fascinated artists and visitors for centuries. Why is it all here? Water, and the Dutch are masters at controlling it. They have to be given that over a quarter of their country is below sea level – hence the name Nether-lands, or literally ‘lower lands’. From the historic urban waterways in Amsterdam to the cycle paths along inland rural channels, you’re never far from the water in Holland.

Netherlands is about the same size as Switzerland but so much flatter, making it great for exploring by bicycle. No wonder there are 32,000km of bike paths across the whole country. But there’s also a good train network so tell us how you want to get around, and what you’d like to see and we’ll create the ultimate Dutch itinerary for you. Tulips and cheese are optional but both are definitely worth including.

Netherlands facts

Let’s start with the basics: this is not Holland. Or at least not only Holland. That’s actually two provinces beside the North Sea containing cities such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague. With almost 18 million squeezed in, Netherlands is one of the most densely-populated countries in the world. Once part of the Habsburg Empire, it became a republic with colonies in Indonesia, New Amsterdam (now New York) and South Africa. Today it’s a monarchy and member of the EU.

Iceland

A wild island of adventure for nature lovers

Standalone red house in the wilderness of Iceland

Geyser: not many English words come from Icelandic but geyser is one. The original Geysir (with its Icelandic spelling) is now dormant but Iceland is still packed with geothermal wonders, from active volcanoes to hot springs and, yes, geysers. But Iceland is the land of fire and ice, with vast glaciers covering one tenth of the island. If that wasn’t enough natural spectacle, don’t forget to look up for the midnight sun and the northern lights. Iceland is nature at its most vivid.

Puffin sitting on a rock by the sea in Iceland

Despite its name, Iceland has a relatively mild climate, even though it’s just below the Arctic Circle. Yes, it’s a winter wonderland during the cold months but summers can actually be warm, thanks to favourable ocean currents. We think that’s best time to explore the spectacular landscape of geothermal activity and coastal scenery. The Ring Road, or Route 1, is the principal paved road around the whole island but more remote roads need a 4WD or ATV.

Iceland facts

Norse settlement of Iceland began in the 9th century, with the country remaining a part of Norway or Denmark until finally independent in 1918. A republic was declared in 1944, with the Althing maintaining its role as the one of the oldest parliaments in the world. As an island nation with largely uninhabitable terrain, Iceland is the least densely-populated country in Europe, with only three inhabitants per square kilometre. It is a member of the European Economic Area.

France facts

In terms of area, France is the largest country in the European Union but its population of around 68 million ranks second behind Germany. For centuries, it was ruled by kings until the French Revolution in 1789 ended the monarchy. Imperial rule made a brief comeback under Napoleon but France is now firmly a republic with an elected president and the capital in Paris. Remnants of the French Empire are the overseas departments, such as Martinique and Réunion.

This southern province is twice the size of Switzerland but home to same number of people, around 8.5 million. It lies between the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean, with the Sierra Nevada mountains dominating the interior. For seven centuries it was a Moorish caliphate under Islamic rule, which finally ended with the Spanish conquest of Granada in 1492. In terms of Egyptian history, Cairo is a veritable newbie. Although the pharaohs ruled from nearby Memphis (now in ruins), the modern capital of Egypt dates back less than 2000 years. Today, Greater Cairo is home to over 21 million people, making it the largest city in the Arab world, and sprawls across both banks of the River Nile about 165km south of the Mediterranean Sea.
