Slow travel in the land of rice

Vietnam

Sometimes when travelling, you have a moment that makes the whole trip worthwhile. And very often, it happens when you least expect it. For me, it was while I was gazing out of a train window, watching the ever-changing landscape of Vietnam unfold before me. I was on board the Vietage train, immersed in the verdant countryside and totally captivated by the rice farmers in the padi fields. It was, in essence, a dream come true – yes, travel agents have wish-lists too, and Vietnam has always been on mine.

Vietnam is vast, with over 3,000km of coastline and countless sights to see. But I wanted to do things differently, to escape the tourist trail and see more of local life. So I joined a small group of travel agents for a discovery tour that went off the beaten track but also took to the tracks, taking the train for a part of the trip.

Capital setting

Buildings featuring a mix of French and colonial style, reflecting Hanoi's's vibrant history

Capital setting

For many visitors, the first taste of Vietnam is Hanoi. Its mix of French and colonial architecture has echoes of its past but the capital still feels alive and fresh. People in shops and restaurants are so welcoming that I felt like a local for much of the time. It’s also very cosmopolitan, with a café society vibe that I didn’t expect. The same goes for the food. Many restaurants serve the freshest phos and summer rolls, while others, such as the one in the Capella Hanoi Hotel, give snails a very Vietnamese twist, serving them with lemongrass, lime leaf and minced pork.

If you’re coming here to explore somewhere new, head to Mai Chau, an oft-overlooked destination about a four-hour drive from Hanoi. Up here in the mountains is the haven that you need after a long journey. I stayed at the Avana Retreat, an exclusive hotel in lush surroundings, with a high comfort level and luxury facilities like private cottages with pools. Nothing is off the menu here, from relaxing massages in the spa to a candlelit dinner for two by the waterfall.

Rural life

Venturing to the nearby village on my daytime treks meant I was inspired by another lifestyle. I spoke to local craftsmen, saw how they worked, found out about their traditions and ate like they did: a picnic with fresh salads and fish with rice overlooking the padi fields. I really felt like I was leaving modern life behind. This lunch was such a unique experience for me, such a beautiful scene that I will never forget it for the rest of my life.

Tracks of time

Tracks of time

Instead of driving, why not opt for something completely different and totally luxurious? For my journey southwards from Da Nang, I boarded The Vietage by Anantara, a train like no other in Vietnam. Sitting in the train’s semi-private carriage, enjoying a three-course meal cooked by the on-board chef, certainly makes the six-hour journey a memorable experience. This is a special kind of slow travel. The landscape is ever changing, the scenery evolving, with only the farmers in their traditional large hats reminding you which country you’re in.

Discretion assured

Discretion assured

Spots like Quy Nhon are what I came to Vietnam for. It’s another place not on the tourist trail, with a beautiful coastline and pristine beaches, totally unspoilt and quiet. To increase this sense of seclusion and calm, getting your own villa is the way to go, right? I chose the Anantara Quy Nhon, a small property with 25 modern villas, each with its own pool. Some are on the hillside, some by the beach, and it was the closest to paradise I’ve ever been. When you stay here, you really savour every moment. For me, Quy Nhon is the best place in Vietnam to hit reset. And a perfect place to end my trip.

Paddling through the wilderness

Canada

A group of people paddling kayaks on a serene lake, enjoying a day of outdoor adventure

Imagine gliding through crystal waters so transparent you can see every detail of every starfish beneath your kayak. From the moment I dipped my paddle into the clear water, a deep sense of peace washed over me, and I knew I was in for something extraordinary. It was me, the kayak and more sea creatures than I ever imagined. British Columbia’s West Coast is remote, rugged and utterly captivating, a place where nature reigns supreme and humans are mere visitors. But the Great Bear Rainforest isn’t only amazing views and wildlife encounters, though there’s plenty of both, it’s also the traditional territory of the Heiltsuk First Nation.

To the edge of the world

To the edge of the world

For eight days I joined a sea kayaking expedition, travelling through this remote wilderness, where the wind-tossed outer islands feel like the edge of the world. We weren’t on well-worn tourist routes – this was real exploration, complete with remote beaches, undeveloped campsites and wolf tracks freshly imprinted in the sand. No mobile signal, no crowds, just raw untouched nature at every turn. We navigated some choppy waters during the trip but even in the moments when my arms ached and the weather turned wild, it only added to the adventure. Each challenge became part of the story.

Through First Nation territory

A weathered stone artifact partially submerged in a coastal waterway, surrounded by seaweed

One of the most moving aspects of my trip was paddling through the ancestral waters of the Heiltsuk First Nation. These waters and lands have been cared for by the Heiltsuk people for millennia, with evidence of human occupation dating back over 14,000 years. Learning about their deep connection to the region was both humbling and eye-opening. Standing at Triquet Island, a significant site for the Heiltsuk, it was impossible not to reflect that this land has been home to countless generations of people. The island itself seemed to carry the weight of their stories.

The joys of going off-grid

Kayakers exploring a remote coastal area, surrounded by lush greenery

The joys of going off-grid

Some of the most memorable moments of the trip weren’t about wildlife sightings or epic landscapes, they were the little joys that come from being off-grid. Morning tidal walks along deserted beaches, discovering the hidden treasures of the sea, the laughter echoing across the water as we rode the swells, accompanied by our guide’s lively shanties while crossing the channels; and evenings spent under the stars with nothing but the stillness of nature around us. There were plenty of logs around to truly “log off”!

Exploring the coast

A panoramic view of the Vancouver skyline at sunset, with boats on the water

Exploring the coast

British Columbia’s coast isn’t only about the intense experience of the Great Bear Rainforest. For those wanting something less rugged, the calm waters around Vancouver Island offer more accessible kayaking tours of sheltered bays and calm waters teeming with wildlife. You can enjoy seeing orcas, seals and eagles without straying too far from your creature comforts. Plus, the urban sophistication of Vancouver is never far away. From secret beaches to quiet hikes, the city is brimming with hidden gems waiting to be explored, not least the largest Chinatown in Canada. Vibrant Vancouver makes the perfect gateway to the peaceful wilderness where the call of the wild is hard to resist.

The Great Bear Rainforest is not just a place you visit, it’s a place you feel. It can change you if you let it. It is a place that stirs the soul. Paddle it to believe it. And invest in quality waterproof gear; this is a rainforest, after all.

Get adventure ready!

Overview Experience

From the city to the sea

Australia

View of the Twelve Apostles along the Great Ocean Road near Melbourne, showcasing dramatic formations rising from the ocean.

Picture this: driving along the open road, deep blue sea to your left, favourite tracks playing, your soul rejoicing as you enjoy the Great Ocean Road. This is one of the world’s classic coastal drives, serving up splendid landscapes, cute wildlife, great food and wonderful beaches in equal measure.  Not forgetting all that fresh sea air, and you’ll get plenty of that because, of course, you’ll have a convertible for this road trip. It’s the best way to both see and feel the power of the ocean that has shaped this impressive coastline.

Urban delight

A classic tram passing through a bustling city center in Melbourne

Urban delight

Melbourne isn’t only the best place to start your road trip, it’s also a perfect spot to spend a few days. The Victorian state capital is bursting with life, from the foodie heaven of the markets to the verdant haven of the botanic gardens. Throw in some beautiful 19th-century architecture, museums aplenty and a laid-back cultural scene, and you can see why many people love Melbourne as much as its big rival, Sydney. It’s the ideal start to your southern Australian adventure.

Wildlife galore

Close-up of a little penguin with a distinctive black and white plumage

Wildlife galore

Just after sunset every day there’s a nightly parade near Melbourne that is impossibly cute – and impossible to miss. After a heavy day’s fishing, the little penguins return to the beach at Phillip Island, emerge from the surf and waddle up the sand. Come a bit earlier and you can discover the koalas at the nearby conservation centre. And all of that’s before you even head out into the countryside: maybe play a round with the kangaroos that inhabit the golf course at Anglesea? Or watch migrating southern right whales as they come close to shore?

Ocean scenery

Aerial view of the Great Ocean Road, showing the Twelve Apostles and the rugged coastline

Ocean scenery

The Great Ocean Road is all about the majestic coastal scenery along the edge of the Southern Ocean. Around every tight corner is a new view of crashing waves and unspoilt beaches. It really is a magnificent drive. The most famous part is the group of rock stacks eroded from the soft limestone, a group known as the 12 Apostles. Sadly only eight remain as the sea is relentless in its destruction. The best way to see them? From the air in a helicopter, not least because you also get amazing views of this whole indented coastline.

Lighthouse standing on a rocky outcrop, with a wooden fence and a path leading to it

On the road

Lighthouse standing on a rocky outcrop, with a wooden fence and a path leading to it

Any road trip worth its salt includes a healthy slice of local life – and this road trip has plenty of salt thanks to all the sea air. This isn’t a long drive so it’s perfect for leisurely stops in little towns you’ve never heard of before and discovering how delightful they are. From the genteel seaside resort of Lorne to the former whaling port of Warrnambool, you’ll find divine seafood, friendly people and a chance to relax and unwind. Slow travel the way it’s meant to be.

Surfer leaps into air on their board, riding the waves at Bells Beach

In the sea

Surfer leaps into air on their board, riding the waves at Bells Beach

Love surfing? Then this is the best place to be. Forget Bondi Beach, come to Bells Beach in Torquay, the birthplace of iconic brands such as Rip Curl and Quicksilver. While the big swells at Bells are only for experienced surfers, beginners can take their first dip with private lessons from an expert instructor. Don’t love surfing? Then go snorkelling with dolphins instead. You get just as wet and it’s far less tiring.

Don’t stop now

A kangaroo standing in a vineyard at sunset

Don’t stop now

The end of the Great Ocean Road doesn’t have to be the end of your road trip. This is, unusually, one part of Australia where the distances aren’t huge so you have options that don’t involve driving for days on end. You could carry on going west into South Australia, heading for the wineries of the Barossa Valley and the wildlife of Kangaroo Island. Or maybe loop back to Melbourne via the rugged mountains of Grampians National Park and the fascinating goldfields around historic Ballarat.

And you’re off!

Staying where the northern lights dance

Finland

Some moments in life are almost too magical to be real. Moments like this: I was outside my cabin at Octola Lodge in Lapland, the snow was pristine, the air was crisp and then, right on cue, the northern lights began to shimmer and swirl above me. It was the kind of beauty that leaves you breathless, like you’ve stepped into a dream. But that’s what Octola Lodge is – a place to experience the impossible, where nature and luxury blend seamlessly. Your own private wilderness in northern Finland.

Octola is a great lodge for multi-generational experiences, with winter wonderland fun for everyone. From sledding and skating to sleigh rides and snowmobiles, the whole family can relish the unspoilt countryside. Of course, it’s open all year round but it’s extra-special in winter.

A secret hideaway

I’ve always craved the kind of travel that takes me off the beaten path, and Octola Lodge was exactly that, a hidden sanctuary deep in the heart of Finnish Lapland. From the moment I arrived, I knew I was in for something special. The lodge is surrounded by dense forests and fields of snow that stretch endlessly in every direction. As soon as I stepped into my luxurious Arctic-chic cabin, I felt the warmth of the fire embrace me. The view from my window? Endless white wilderness, as far as the eye could see. I hadn’t even unpacked but I already felt the pull of the wild outside.

A magical moment

A magical moment

Seeing the northern lights for the first time will leave you speechless. Literally, and your mouth might even drop open in wonder. All bundled up, and with a hot cup of tea, I waited outside, eyes fixed on the sky. At first, it was only stars twinkling against a dark canvas, but then ribbons of green and violet slowly began to dance. I couldn’t help but laugh out loud, like a kid seeing their first fireworks. It’s funny how something so vast can make you feel small yet so alive. In that moment, it wasn’t just the lights that had me mesmerised, it was the complete silence. I felt like the only person on earth.

A natural wonder

The northern lights, also called the aurora borealis, are a stunning natural light display in the night sky, primarily visible in the high-latitude regions of the Arctic. They occur when charged particles from the sun, known as the solar wind, collide with the earth’s atmosphere. These collisions excite the gases in the atmosphere, causing them to emit light in various colours, most commonly green but sometimes red, blue or purple. It’s a spectacle like no other.

Finland for foodies

Finland for foodies

Octola Lodge is more than just a wonderful place to lay your head, it’s a feast for the senses. Each meal was an experience in itself, meticulously prepared by the lodge’s private chef using locally-sourced ingredients. There’s something deeply satisfying about knowing the food on my plate came from the land and lakes around me. Each bite felt like I was tasting a little piece of Finland’s soul. And after a day of adventure, there was nothing better than enjoying a warm meal by the fire, watching the snowfall softly outside.

Stillness in wilderness

inspiration-finland-snow-covered-trees-winter-forest play video

What truly made my time at Octola Lodge unforgettable wasn’t just the adventures or the incredible food. It was the stillness. In a world where we’re all constantly rushing, you can come here to slow down. Some days I didn’t venture far from the lodge. Instead, I enjoyed the sauna, where I’d let the heat wash over me before stepping out into the icy cold. Other times, I’d simply sit by the window, watching as the sky turned from pale blue to inky black, waiting to see if the northern lights would make an encore. There’s a kind of peace here that stays with you long after you leave.

On the trail of truffles and wines

Italy

It’s early morning and the crisp autumn air fills my lungs as I venture into the quiet woods surrounding Alba, a region of Piedmont famed for its truffles. A local trifolao, a skilled truffle hunter, leads the way accompanied by his trusty dog. With each rustle of leaves as we walk between the trees, I feel a shiver of anticipation: the hunt is on.

The truffle forests of Alba aren’t the only reason for gourmet lovers to visit Piedmont. This region of northern Italy also has the rolling vineyards of Barolo and the royal streets of Turin, making it one of Italy’s cultural and gastronomic gems.

The thrill of the hunt

Let’s start with those divine truffles, and how they are found. The dogs are trained to sniff out the prized fungi buried deep beneath the earth, sometimes hidden up to 30cm below the surface. The dog that I’m with sniffs eagerly, his excitement growing as he nears a patch of soil. When he finally uncovers his prize, the earthy aroma of the rare white truffle fills the air. I realise that I’m witnessing something ancient and profound, an experience deeply rooted in the region’s history.

The fun of the fair

But the magic doesn’t stop there. Back in the truffle capital of the world, the annual Alba White Truffle Fair is in full swing. The town buzzes with excitement as food lovers from around the globe gather to celebrate this delicacy. Stalls line the hall, offering everything from fresh truffles to exquisite local products, all culminating in a sensory feast that’s impossible to forget. By the way, white truffle season is late September to early December, whereas black truffles are typically found in November to March.

Each sip tells a story of tradition, of vineyards passed down through generations, and the passion of winemakers who have mastered the art. The flavours of truffle and wine merge perfectly, especially over a plate of tajarin, a delicate egg pasta topped with freshly shaved truffles. Paired with a glass of Barolo, it’s a meal that embodies the essence of Piedmont’s culinary prowess. For more on the whole art of winemaking, I also visit the fascinating WiMu, Italy’s most innovative wine museum.

Royal elegance

The opulent interior of palace, featuring details and grand architecture

Royal elegance

Turin was the first capital of a united Italy, but is still the regional capital, and this once-royal city offers a very different side to Piedmont. Wandering through grand piazzas and past baroque façades, I can feel Turin’s regal history all around me. Piazza Castello is the heart of the city, with its impressive Palazzo Reale, a reminder of the powerful Savoy dynasty that once ruled from here. The kings are long gone but their legacy remains.

Tagliatelle pasta, white truffles, and a truffle slicer on a wooden board

Culinary delights

Tagliatelle pasta, white truffles, and a truffle slicer on a wooden board

But Turin isn’t only about history, this city is also a gastronomic haven. I find a restaurant where the pride of Piedmontese cuisine is on display. Tajarin pasta with truffle shavings, risotto infused with Barolo wine and slow-cooked meats drizzled with truffle oil are a few local specialties. Every bite feels like a celebration of tradition and innovation. Turin masterfully blends its royal past with a contemporary flair for food and wine, making it an unforgettable stop on my journey.

Arrivederci Piedmont

Arrivederci Piedmont

As I leave this lovely region, the memories of truffle hunting, wine tasting and strolling through Turin’s elegant streets linger. It’s a place where every moment is an ode to the finest pleasures in life and I know that I’ll be drawn back to its charm. Whether you’re a food lover, a wine enthusiast or someone who appreciates history (or all three together!), this region invites you to indulge all your senses. Once you’ve experienced Piedmont, you’ll want to return again and again.

The mesmerizing pattern of salt crystals on the surface of the Salar de Uyuni

It’s white but it’s not. It’s a mirror but it’s not. The one thing I was certain of is that it’s flat. Very flat. I was standing in one of nature’s greatest optical wonders, the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia and it’s like nowhere else on earth. I felt as if I had stepped into another realm, one where nature’s beauty knows no bounds. These salt flats are more than just a destination, they are where luxury and nature come together to captivate your senses.

Stunning reflection of mountains in the Salar de Uyuni salt flat

The Salar de Uyuni is the world’s largest salt flat, covering an area of over 10,000 km² at an altitude of 3658m above sea level. This awe-inspiring landscape is often referred to as the world’s biggest mirror due to its ability to reflect the sky during the rainy season.

Ancient history

How did we get giant salt flats so high that they’re halfway up to the sky? Millions of years ago the area was a huge prehistoric lake that gradually shrank, leaving behind several smaller lakes. As the climate changed, the lakes evaporated, leaving behind a thick layer of salt and other minerals, forming the vast flats we see today. One of those precious minerals is lithium, a critical component in modern batteries, but lithium extraction must be done sustainably to preserve this fragile ecosystem.

People on the mirror like salt flats of the Salar de Uyuni

There are few places that can take your breath away quite like the Salar de Uyuni. The sheer scale of the salt flats is overwhelming, with the horizon blending into the sky so that it confuses your sense of place. As I ventured further into the flats, the ground transformed into a perfect reflection of the sky above, creating a mirror-like effect so stunning it almost felt like a dream. During the wet season, the salt flats turn into this enormous shimmering mirror but even in the dry months, the patterns formed by the cracked salt surface are mesmerisingly surreal.

Natural wonder

Flock of flamingos wading in the red waters of Laguna Colorada

It may be super salty but it’s not dead. The landscape is bursting with colour and life, if you know where to look. I was lucky to spot flocks of flamingos wading through the vibrant red and green waters of nearby lagoons. These rich colours against the stark white of the salt created a sight that felt almost unreal. And as the day faded, the show didn’t stop: at night the sky above became an endless canopy of stars. Lying beneath the Milky Way, surrounded by such a unique landscape, I felt connected to the universe in a way that’s hard to put into words. It was impossible not to feel a profound sense of peace and reflection.

Magical memories

Vast expanse of salt flats stretching to the horizon under a dramatic sky

Magical memories

As I left the Salar de Uyuni to return to reality, I knew that part of me would remain in those salt flats forever. It had so completely captured my heart. The beauty of this place is that it’s not just somewhere you visit, it’s somewhere that becomes part of you, a memory you carry with you long after you’ve left. And although Bolivia has so much more to offer, from lively cities to rich cultural heritage, the Salar de Uyuni is one of the most magical places I’ve ever been.

Elegant and exclusive

First impressions count, and the Sanctuary Sun Boat III didn’t disappoint. It exuded the discreet elegant ambience of an exclusive club but was welcoming like an old friend.

The intimate atmosphere and personalised service started from the moment the group was greeted on board with cool cocktails. The adventures could begin.

Exploring with a twist

Our graceful journey along the Nile included traditional meals, themed dinners and, of course, visits to incredible temples, such as Luxor and Karnak . Various challenges added a unique element to these excursions.

The group had a photo contest, a battle of dancing performances and a bargaining competition at the local market. More fun for everyone but also very personalised to the location and the king – the birthday kid!

The Nile is the world’s longest river but it’s the 200km stretch between Luxor and Aswan that make up a classic Nile Cruise. Take time to explore the timeless wonders of temples like Karnak and Abu Simbel. Hear captivating tales of pharaohs and gods, bringing history to life in an unforgettable journey. This is Egypt at its best, the ultimate combination of modern luxury and ancient grandeur.

Tuk-tuk adventure

Driving a tuk-tuk is easy but a 25-vehicle convoy in a city? That’s a real challenge. Guests loved exploring local landmarks in this unique way.

Local police provided an escort with motorcycles, flashing lights and sometimes blaring sirens, ensuring a clear route.

Little things make a difference. When the heat was getting too much, guests were handed a cold drink or refreshing towel.

Sometimes not everyone wants to do the same activity. Optional programme items let the guests shape island life as they wished.

Ethical options exist: Phuket Elephant Sanctuary prioritises the welfare of sick and elderly elephants, offering refuge and care for the hearty giants.

Love Thai cuisine? Then a cooking class is a must. It was a culinary experience while learning from professional chefs.
