Discover the meaning and history of the evil eye

With so many travel options in this diverse country, let us take time (perhaps over a Turkish coffee?) to chat about where to go and what to see. We know the perfect places for trekking, market stalls to check out, the must-see historic sites and the best seas for sailing. And not forgetting where to stay: with Cosa, you’ll be in boutique hotels in Istanbul, relaxing retreats in the hills or at the beach.

Turkey facts

The Treaty of Lausanne, a peace treaty signed in Switzerland in 1923, recognised the boundaries of the modern state of Turkey. The country now has a population of around 82.5 million. Istanbul was formerly known as Constantinople, the city that was the capital of the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires. Today Ankara is the capital city of Turkey, although the country’s official name is Turkiye. Fun fact: Turkey is the world’s largest exporter of hazelnuts.

Italy facts

From the Roman Empire to the Renaissance, Italy has played a leading role in European history for centuries. But it’s actually only been a modern country since 1861, when the many city-states like Venice and Florence finally united as one kingdom. After World War Two Italy became a republic, with an elected government in the capital, Rome, and a founding member of the European Union. Its population is around 60 million.

Morocco facts

The kingdom of Morocco has coastlines on both the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. That crucial position meant that over the centuries it attracted attention from Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, Spanish and French, all of whom mixed with the local Berber population and left their traces in the architecture, culture and cuisine. The final French protectorate ended in 1956, since when Morocco has been fully independent. Almost all of its 36 million inhabitants are Muslim.
