The mother of
all road trips

United States

View from red car on famous Route 66 in Californian desert

Small talk can lead to big changes. At the car rental counter in Chicago airport, the agent casually asked me where I was going. Along Route 66, I replied with a grin. Oh my, she said, you’ll need a much bigger car for that. I’d booked what I thought was a large car, at least by European standards, but she upgraded me to something the size of a small boat. And she was right: this trip needs a car with plenty of comfort. After all, you’re not only driving almost 4000km, you’re also travelling back in time to the automobile heyday of the United States.

It doesn’t quite stretch from coast to coast but the original Route 66 runs from lakeshore to seashore, from Chicago to Los Angeles, across eight states and three time zones.

The Mother Road

This is the ultimate American road trip, or as John Steinbeck called it, the Mother Road, and it’s literally a cross-section of the country. Big-city lights and small-town charm, green prairies and red deserts, past and present intertwined along one long road west. The only problem is that it isn’t one road anymore.

Sadly, in some places this iconic route has disappeared under the asphalt of giant interstate highways. But there is more than enough left to make it a drive to remember. Thanks to preservation groups, Historic Route 66 saw a revival in the 1990s with many sights restored to their former glory or ghost towns preserved as a reminder of a life long since gone.

That’s essentially what driving Route 66 is all about. Paying homage to a bygone era, which wasn’t as romantic as it now appears but is still an attraction for many. It isn’t just that this road has been idolised in books, films and songs, it’s part of recent history. A route that was established in 1926 but decommissioned in 1984 became synonymous with American life for six decades. The migration west to California and the building of the freeways, the decline of small towns and the dominance of the automobile: all that change encapsulated in one road.

Driving
Route 66

Take your time. You could barrel straight through in a week but then you’d miss out on the very reason for going on this trip. The drive is the destination. Stop off at an art deco gas station, take a detour to the Petrified Forest, spend a day in beguiling Santa Fe. That’s what this road trip is for. Whether you’re here for the scenery (the Grand Canyon isn’t on the route but it’s a mere two hours from it) or the souvenirs (the Route 66 memorabilia is great), there’s never a dull moment.

How do we know? Because we’ve been there, done that and yes, we bought the T-shirt. We’ve driven the whole of Route 66 from Lake Michigan to the Pacific Ocean so can help you plan your trip. Whether it’s a luxury hotel from the 30s or an authentic motel from the 50s, we know where to stay. If you want to stand on a corner in Winslow, Arizona or find the way to Amarillo, all you need do is go west. And we can make it happen.

If you’re a president or a princess, then there’s only one place in New York to stay: The Carlyle. If you want to feel like a president or a princess, then The Carlyle is the place to stay in New York. Since 1930, this iconic hotel has been welcoming the world into its cocoon of indulgent relaxation and exquisite decoration. No wish is left ungranted and no guest leaves unfulfilled. Check in and you might never want to leave.

The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel,  has an unbeatable location in the Upper East Side. One block away is the verdant delight of Central Park, while a wealth of shops and museums are all within walking distance. A morning stroll to the Guggenheim? Easy. Designer stores along Madison Avenue? Literally on your doorstep. And all with splendid views from the rooms and suites on higher floors.

But this is more than a hotel, albeit an exemplary one which consistently sets the standards for service and sophistication. The heart of this home-that-is-a-hotel is the beguiling array of public rooms where entertainment and excellence merge seamlessly into each other. A cocktail at the bar, a star on the stage, an evening to remember – all as much part of The Carlyle as the sumptuous suites above.

Tea and harmony

Beyond the celebrated bar are other enticing spots for food and fun. We loved afternoon tea in the decadently-decorated Gallery but made sure to leave room for dinner in stylish Dowling’s restaurant. Best of all is Café Carlyle, an intimate supper club with classic cabaret performances from the likes of Alan Cumming or Rita Wilson. There’s never a dull moment at The Carlyle.

The place to be

Supple fingers tickle the ivories while expert hands craft cocktails. A film star here, a politician there, a hubbub of contented chatter. And you’re in the middle of it all, in the heart of Bemelmans Bar, which has been the place to be seen (and watched) for over 75 years. Its walls are decorated with imaginative drawings by Ludwig Bemelmans, creator of the Madeline children’s books.

New York can be tiring on your feet and tough on your body but The Carlyle has the ultimate antidote: the Valmont Spa. After a morning of shopping or before an evening of dining, this is the perfect place to relax and rejuvenate. From facials and wraps to couples massage and LED waterfalls, anything is possible. And even better, Valmont is a Swiss company. No wonder its treatments are so good.

Where past and
present live together

Morocco

A man and his donkey in the narrow streets of the old medina of Fez in Morocco. leonori / Shutterstock.com

Until you stand in a narrow alleyway, amid vibrant food stalls and throngs of people, it’s hard to imagine what life is like in the world’s largest pedestrian zone. Laden donkeys amble past, their hooves protected from the rough stone surfaces by pieces of old tyres. Tanned lined hands offer you to taste an olive or inspect a hand-carved comb. And almost all the 10,000 different alleyways look remarkably similar to untrained eyes. This is life as it’s been lived for centuries in Morocco, unvarnished and authentic. Are you ready  for it?

Selection of herbs and dried flowers at a market in Fez, Morocco.

Colourful and chaotic, the medina of Fez is a magical maze that’s instantly as beguiling, and more bewildering, than the one in Marrakech.

Metalworkers hammering out huge copper pans, tailors concentrating on intricate stitching, sheep’s heads lying bloody on a board, juicy olives piled high. Every corner reveals something new, every alley so crammed with life that it’s almost overwhelming. With our guide, you won’t get lost but will find the perfect route through this lively labyrinth. And possibly be tempted to buy a few goodies along the way.

A great tan?

You smell it long before you see it, a tangy acrid scent that works its way into your nostrils. By the time you reach the entrance, you gladly hold the proffered sprig of mint in front of your nose so you can go closer. And then you forget the smell, because the vision of the tannery sweeps all other senses aside. Countless vats sit crammed into an open square, each one filled with liquid of every hue. Deep indigo and pale rose, coffee brown and sunflower yellow, bright white and slate grey. It’s a giant’s paint pot just waiting for an artist.

Leather heaven

Leather heaven

Then you look closer and spot the men at work, some waist deep in the vats, others hauling wet skins around. Hard labour in the blazing sun (not forgetting the pungent stink) but leather has been tanned this way here for centuries and the tradition shows no signs of dying out. The Chouara Tannery is the largest in Fez, so attracts a fair few visitors, but our guide will take you to a prime viewing spot with the best leather goods on sale. The countless slippers and bags aren’t just eye-catching, they are probably the softest leather you’ve ever felt.

Beyond the souk

Beautiful details at the entrance of a madrassa in Fez, Morocco.

Beyond the souk

As amazing as the markets and tanneries are, there’s more to the medina than these highlights. This ancient walled city is home to historic mosques and universities, which have been comforting and educating people for over twelve centuries. Fez was also the national capital until 1912, so our guided walk includes the opulent gateway to the royal palace.

If you want to sample that luxurious lifestyle, then there’s nothing better than staying overnight in a traditional riad, or townhouse set around a courtyard. Some are quite simple but one of our favourites is Riad Fes, a lavishly decorated 17th-century building on a slight hill overlooking the rest of the medina. It’s quiet yet central, discreet and decadent, with a hammam spa, superb food and excellent service. It really was hard to leave once we were there.

Sleeping out
in the rainforest

Costa Rica

Aerial view of Lapa Rios a boutique rainforest lodge in Costa Rica Aerial view ©Lapa Rios

It’s hard to sleep through the dawn chorus. This isn’t the gentle twittering of birds, it’s the guttural growl of howler monkeys, and it’s more effective than any alarm clock. The cacophony is even more intrusive because your room has no walls or windows. And if the monkeys didn’t wake you, then the sunrise probably will, with no blinds or curtains to block out the new day’s rays. Welcome to life in a rainforest lodge. Welcome to Costa Rica!

Lapa Rios tree frog
Red-eyed tree frog ©Nina Müller

Let’s be clear: this isn’t glamping. You don’t sleep in a fancy tent and you have a proper bathroom. But it also isn’t a normal hotel.

What is an eco-lodge?

The swish villas dotted along the elevated walkway might lack walls and windows but they have every other possible comfort (okay, no AC but that’s not needed), including screens to keep out the bigger bugs and over-bed nets for the smaller ones. Most importantly, this is an eco-lodge, built and run with both guests and Mother Nature in mind.

Until you’ve stayed in such a place, it’s hard to know what that means. I had visions of spartan rooms and beans for every meal. I was so wrong. Lapa Rios Lodge is as luxurious as it gets. Not only the villas but the delicious food and the magical setting in the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica. Lapa Rios sits in over 1,000 acres of rainforest on a ridge above the Pacific Ocean, surrounded by tropical flora and fauna. And it’s the plants and animals that are the real highlight of staying here.

We got up at dawn (thanks to the monkeys) to go out spotting scarlet macaws and black hawks. We took the night tour searching for hairy tarantulas and red-eyed frogs. We tramped through the trees learning which plants can be used as medicines. And we went behind the scenes to see how the lodge manages to be sustainable. The key factor: pigs.

Sustainability?

Lapa Rios little girl planting tree
Tree planting ©Lapa Rios

Sustainability?

Well, not only pigs. Banning single-use plastics, using 100% renewable energy, only employing Costa Ricans, cleaning with biodegradable products, cooking with organic local ingredients, planting trees – all of those are crucial parts of the lodge’s sustainability. But the pigs are the stars. They are the perfect way to dispose of organic waste and turn it into biogas that can be used as fuel. One surprising factor was that the pandemic has undermined this sustainability model. Fewer visitors mean less waste so not enough food for the pigs, which in turn means fewer pigs so less biogas. Not forgetting the lack of work for the staff.

A model for the future?

Lapa-Rios-waterfall
Waterfall hile ©Lapa Rios

A model for the future?

As I left Lapa Rios after three wonderful days of exploration and relaxation, I couldn’t help but wonder if eco-lodges like this are only possible at the top end of the market. It’s hard to see how a mid-range hotel could charge its normal rates while still being totally sustainable, paying fair wages, buying organic food, supporting local communities and training future guides.

The old adage, you get what you pay for is certainly true here. When it was founded by John and Karen Lewis back in 1993, Lapa Rios was a pioneer in the field of luxury experiences in the wilderness. While many hotels might now claim to be eco-friendly, this is the real deal. This is not greenwashing or eco-pretence. This is a model for today’s tourism that might seem like it costs the earth but actually helps save it.

The hotel that
treats you like royalty

Royal Mansour, Marrakech

It’s only a few steps from the centre of Marrakech’s medina to a mini version specially built inside the walls of the imperial city. This one isn’t nearly as hectic or huge as the real one, but it re-creates that enticing labyrinth of narrow alleyways and tall buildings. So much so, that you’re bound to get lost at least once in the Royal Mansour, but in a good way and always with help at hand to put you right.

pool and patio, set in the Royal Mansour Riad Terrace

This mini-medina is actually a hotel of unparalleled luxury that’s both traditional and modern, where intricate hand-carved stone walls sit beside state-of-the art technology. The Royal Mansour is a hotel where every guest is treated like royalty, and not just because the king of Morocco is the owner. You can enjoy every indulgence your heart desires, from private pools to personal butlers.

A spacious hotel lobby featuring a large window, a grand table, and elegant draples

Staying at the Royal Mansour is like being in a fairy tale, one where dreams really do come true. But amid all the magnificence, our favourite moment when we stayed here was quite simple: sitting on our own private roof terrace, looking up at the stars and listening to the call to prayer echo across Marrakech. That was when we truly appreciated this oasis of calm inside the beating heart of an intoxicating city.

Unwind in elegance

We felt instantly more relaxed by merely stepping into the soothing elegant spa. It’s a symphony in white, from walls to chairs, and it’s all deliciously cool and calm after the heat outside. Treatments include an indulgent hammam (this is Morocco, after all), which if you’ve never tried, you definitely should. Less steamy but just as peaceful is the vast outdoor pool with private pavilions.

Exemplary service

The staff at the Royal Mansour were so discreet and professional that we almost didn’t notice they were there. The gardeners tending the immaculate grounds say hello, the concierge can handle almost any request, the breakfast waiters are happy to recommend local delicacies. Guests in the larger riads get very personal service, with their own butler and even a chef to cater for them in house.

Sumptuous meals

Three restaurants so three options for your three meals a day. We were wowed by the gourmet cuisine in the opulent Italian restaurant, complete with Murano glass chandeliers. Local flavours with a decadent touch abound at a divine Moroccan restaurant. And for more relaxed meals, a cool outdoor space by the pool – also perfect for a delectable breakfast that combines French and Moroccan tastes.

Building a future

Garderner harvesting from Hotel Royal Mansour garden

One crucial aspect for us was that the Royal Mansour focuses on looking after its staff and the planet. For example, 80% of the power comes from burning discarded olive stones collected from all over the country, while a vegetable garden provides seasonal produce and herbs for meals and treatments. An impressive 90% of the staff are Moroccan, and a hotel & catering school is being set up next door.

You can take your pick of transport to travel around this country, the fifth largest in Europe. Coastal ferries are the best way to visit the country’s many archipelagos and fast trains can whizz you between Sweden’s cities. If you are short on time, Sweden has several domestic airports and it’s worth considering flying to Copenhagen airport which is only 32km from Malmo. You could even drive over the famous Oresund bridge from Denmark as your port of entry.

Sweden facts

Sweden, with a population of around 10.5 million, is a constitutional monarchy. The country’s main language is Swedish but there are five minority languages. The north is home to the Sami people, one of the world’s indigenous peoples and one of Sweden’s official national minorities. Forests cover 69% of Sweden’s land area so not surprisingly one of its most important exports is wood. Other exports include vehicles, pharmaceuticals and brands such as Ikea, which currently has over 420 stores across the world.

A world city with a world of possibilities

London, UK

Sunset and skyline behind Tower Bridge in London on a beautiful evening

There’s never a dull moment in this huge metropolis. London hasn’t always been the capital of England but for the past few centuries this city has dominated the lives of everyone in the UK. It’s home to both the Houses of Parliament and Buckingham Palace, as well as being the main financial and transport hub for the whole country. London has around nine million inhabitants, over 300 different languages, the world’s first underground railway and more five-star hotels than any other city.
