A New York alphabet

Fleet of yellow taxi cabs driving down the street of Broadway in New York

United States

A is for apple, the Big Apple, and I fell in love at first bite. Whenever you step out onto the streets of Manhattan, there’s a rush of excitement and I still feel that thrill each time I go. Yes, New York is hectic, crowded and rarely quiet but also exciting, bewitching and full of life. With avenues that are canyons and buildings as tall as redwoods, this is a man-made version of the American dream landscape, waiting for you to relish its energy. So come with us on an alphabetical tour of our favourite things about New York.

We love NYC

Luxury on rails through the Highlands

Scotland

Atmospheric music playing as you board the sleek carriages, local delicacies on tap for you to try and dramatic scenery right outside the window. Yes, we are talking about the train ride of your dreams and, no, it doesn’t run to Venice (and there are no murderers on board). This is the Royal Scotsman, the most luxurious train in the British Isles and one of our favourite railway journeys. Come aboard and we’ll show you why. The Royal Scotsman (a Belmond train) runs along twelve different routes lasting from two to seven nights.

Australia

You can walk around it or fly over it. You can get right up close to it or admire it from afar. You can watch it change colour from brown to red to purple to black. How ever you choose to interact with it, Uluru will never cease to astound and impress you. But this vast rock isn’t just a natural wonder at the heart of Australia, it’s also a cultural icon in the hearts of Aborigines. Formerly known as Ayers Rock, Uluru is one of the largest monoliths in the world but, rather like an iceberg, most of it is underground. The top 348 metres is visible above ground, with around 2.5km hidden beneath the red sand.

The faraway corner of the world

A stunning view of the inside of a cave, with elaborate patterns and layers of blue and white on the walls.

Patagonia

This is the end of the world as we know it. Not in an apocalyptic sense but in a geographic one. At the southern reaches of our planet, where the Andes meet the oceans, is the distant region of untamed wilderness that is Patagonia. Those in search of adventure will find it in this magnificent land of immense dimensions, among rugged mountains, sparkling lakes and infinite silence. Patagonia is a place where luxury and landscape go hand in hand, offering an unforgettable experience that will live with you, and within you, forever.

Let’s go!

Rwanda

He was casually munching when I first saw him. I was maybe ten metres away, close enough to see his strong features, but he seemed oblivious to my presence; in fact, he seemed oblivious to everything apart from the leaves he was eating, almost as if he was chilling out after a long day. And then he turned and looked straight at me. A close encounter with a mountain gorilla is one of the world’s most rewarding experiences but fewer than 100 people a day can visit these wonderful animals in their natural habitat, the rainforests of Rwanda. And getting to see them is no walk in the park.

Herbs, hiking and a hearty welcome

Switzerland

A herb walk. Such a simple idea: walking and talking, and learning about herbs. So simple, in fact, that you almost can’t believe how rewarding it is. Who would have thought that the best way to get to know about the natural treasures of the Appenzell region would be with such a gentle activity? But it is exactly that. An experience that teaches about the healing power and culinary use of herbs along with a mountain hike to uncover some surprises in the area. This unique tour, led by Cosa’s favourite ‘lazy gardener’, begins just outside the village of Appenzell in the eastern foothills of the Swiss Alps.

Finding peace in the Land of the Blue Sky

A group of horses galloping through shallow waters, with riders on two of the horses.

Mongolia

Galloping on horseback like Genghis Khan across golden dunes, the endless expanse before me, the wind in my hair. And when night falls, stargazing in the desert before snuggling up in a cosy yurt. That was how I pictured my Mongolian adventure. And it’s what I got. Almost. True, the unusually hot temperatures prompted my pony to take a dip in a waterhole so I had to unexpectedly do the same. But amid this vast empty space that was not made to inhabit people, I would find an impressive silence and inner peace.

B is for Brooklyn Bridge. The best reason to leave Manhattan is to walk over this iconic suspension bridge, which was the longest in the world when it opened in 1883.

C is for Carlyle. After days filled with walking and talking, this historic hotel is the ideal retreat from the busy city. Quiet, refined and with Central Park views.

D is for downtown. The oldest part of the city, where there’s no grid pattern. As much a direction as a location: wherever you are in Manhattan, downtown is south.

I is for insomnia. In a city that never sleeps how do you stay awake? By having fun: nightclubs, jazz clubs, gay bars, cocktail bars, whatever you want is here.

J is for JFK. Originally called Idlewild, JFK is the busiest airport in NYC. If you must stay longer than the check-in times, check out the super retro TWA hotel. It’s fab.

K is for King Kong. You don’t have to be a giant ape to admire the Empire State Building in all its glory. With us, you get an exclusive tour of the Art Deco wonder.

L is for Liberty. She’s 46m tall, green, French and over 130 years old. Enjoying the view from inside her crown is only for a select few, so make sure one of them is you.

M is for museums. The Met, MoMA, the Guggenheim and the Frick. New York has some big names but my favourite is the small but fascinating Tenement Museum.

N is for 9/11 Memorial. Not everything here is about hedonism. I always take time to visit this moving spot with its footprint fountains and endless names of the missed.

O is for observation deck. Tall buildings have the best views but which is the best viewpoint? My picks are One World, the Empire State Building and newcomer The Edge.

P is for parks. New York can be a concrete jungle so escape to its green spaces. Not only giant Central Park but bijou gems like Bryant Park or Washington Square.

Q is for quick. A New York minute is over in a flash. Nothing happens slowly here (except the traffic) so brace yourself – and leave time to sit back and enjoy it all.

R is for Rockefeller Center. Famed for its Christmas tree and skating rink, this is also a magical choice for private events in the Rainbow Room or rooftop garden.

W is for walking. I call exploring New York on foot urban hiking. Take a walk up Fifth Avenue, stroll around SoHo or amble to the Ramble in Central Park.

X is for xs. That doesn’t mean ‘extra small’ (nothing is small here), it means excess. This is the biggest, brightest, brashest city in America so revel in its exuberance.

Y is for yellow. They’re everywhere (except in the rain). Taking a yellow cab is a New York movie moment but know where you’re going because the driver might not.

Z is for Zabars. I discovered this archetypal NY deli on my third trip to the city – its bagels are to die for (try one with lox and a schmear). Now I go back every time.

An African safari like no other

Botswana Mokoro Ride in Chobe River

Botswana

Mokoro is a word you’ve probably never heard but once you’ve sat in one, you’ll never forget it. This low dug-out canoe is skilfully steered through lush wetlands, with you sitting at the front, camera at the ready.  There will be wildlife galore but this isn’t any African safari, it’s a unique way to see one of the last natural habitats for many endangered species. It’s a haven of peace and a photographer’s paradise. It is the Okavango Delta in Botswana.

View from red car on famous Route 66 in Californian desert

Small talk can lead to big changes. At the car rental counter in Chicago airport, the agent casually asked me where I was going. Along Route 66, I replied with a grin. Oh my, she said, you’ll need a much bigger car for that. I’d booked what I thought was a large car, at least by European standards, but she upgraded me to something the size of a small boat. And she was right: you do need a car with plenty of comfort for this trip. After all, you’re not only driving almost 4000km, you’re also travelling back in time to the automobile heyday of the United States.

Cruising at a new level of luxury

Luxury cruise in midst of scenic ice

Northern Europe

Once you’re on a Scenic cruise, you’ll only have one question: is it a private yacht, a cruise ship or a boutique hotel? The answer is easy: it’s all three. The sleek ship, Scenic Eclipse, is small enough to go where others can’t but large enough for you to have room to breathe. The itineraries are designed to combine inspiring adventures with indulgent relaxation so you get the best of both worlds. The experience is like no other cruise we’ve been on, where luxury and discovery go hand in hand.

Welcome to the world’s happy place

Buddhist Monk sitting on Monastery wall in Bhutan

Bhutan

We all have a happy place. Somewhere we can go to escape from the world and switch off, even if sometimes that visit is emotional not physical. For some, it’s the much-loved spot frequented as a child; for others, a favourite hike or idyllic beach. But what if the world itself needed a happy place: where would that be? There can be only one answer: Bhutan: This tiny mountain kingdom measures success and progress in terms of happiness not wealth, a nation that focuses on Gross National Happiness rather than Gross Domestic Product.

Sitting on your deck with your feet dangling in your pool, listening to the waves lapping on the nearby sand, that’s when it hits you: your first Laucala Island moment. Each guest has their own personal variation, but for everyone it’s that moment when you let go and relax into this tropical paradise. This private island resort in Fiji is the ultimate escape from everything. Here you can switch off and recharge, indulge and enjoy yourself, or simply breathe. Once you’re here, you’ll never want to leave; once you leave, you’ll always want to come back.

Local festivals for every season

Switzerland

The Swiss love their festivals. So much so that every town and village seems to have one of its own. Some are found across the whole country, such as the descent of the cows from the mountains every autumn. Others, like the spring carnival in Basel, attract crowds in their thousands. Wherever they happen and however big they are, Swiss festivals are not just a date in a calendar but are cherished as part of local life. We’ve picked seven of our regional favourites spread across the year.

How to live like a Carioca

Catch the locals playing football at the beaches of Rio de Janeiro

Brazil

It was love at first sight. I’m not sure how Rio felt, mainly because it has so many admirers that one more was just another body on Copacabana beach. But I’ve been a Carioca at heart ever since I lived in the ‘Marvellous City’. Not only because Rio is literally in the heart of every Ca-rio-ca (or resident of the city) but mainly thanks to the vital combination of sun, samba, beaches and football. But if you were to be a Carioca for a day, what would it be like? Here’s how to live like a real Carioca all day, from the essential elements through local favourites to the ultimate Rio experiences.

It doesn’t quite stretch from coast to coast but the original Route 66 runs from lakeshore to seashore, from Chicago to Los Angeles, across eight states and three time zones.

The Mother Road

This is the ultimate American road trip, or as John Steinbeck called it, the Mother Road, and it’s literally a cross-section of the country. Big-city lights and small-town charm, green prairies and red deserts, past and present intertwined along one long road west. The only problem is that it isn’t one road anymore.

©Diccon Bewes
©Diccon Bewes

Sadly, in some places this iconic route has disappeared under the asphalt of giant interstate highways. But there is more than enough left to make it a drive to remember. Thanks to preservation groups, Historic Route 66 saw a revival in the 1990s with many sights restored to their former glory or ghost towns preserved as a reminder of a life long since gone.

That’s essentially what driving Route 66 is all about. Paying homage to a bygone era, which wasn’t as romantic as it now appears but is still an attraction for many. It isn’t just that this road has been idolised in books, films and songs, it’s part of recent history. A route that was established in 1926 but decommissioned in 1984 became synonymous with American life for six decades. The migration west to California and the building of the freeways, the decline of small towns and the dominance of the automobile: all that change encapsulated in one road.

Driving
Route 66

Take your time. You could barrel straight through in a week but then you’d miss out on the very reason for going on this trip. The drive is the destination. Stop off at an art deco gas station, take a detour to the Petrified Forest, spend a day in beguiling Santa Fe. That’s what this road trip is for. Whether you’re here for the scenery (the Grand Canyon isn’t on the route but it’s a mere two hours from it) or the souvenirs (the Route 66 memorabilia is great), there’s never a dull moment.

©Diccon Bewes

How do we know? Because we’ve been there, done that and yes, we bought the T-shirt. We’ve driven the whole of Route 66 from Lake Michigan to the Pacific Ocean so can help you plan your trip. Whether it’s a luxury hotel from the 30s or an authentic motel from the 50s, we know where to stay. If you want to stand on a corner in Winslow, Arizona or find the way to Amarillo, all you need do is go west. And we can make it happen.

If you’re a president or a princess, then there’s only one place in New York to stay: The Carlyle. If you want to feel like a president or a princess, then The Carlyle is the place to stay in New York. Since 1930, this iconic hotel has been welcoming the world into its cocoon of indulgent relaxation and exquisite decoration. No wish is left ungranted and no guest leaves unfulfilled. Check in and you might never want to leave.

The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel,  has an unbeatable location in the Upper East Side. One block away is the verdant delight of Central Park, while a wealth of shops and museums are all within walking distance. A morning stroll to the Guggenheim? Easy. Designer stores along Madison Avenue? Literally on your doorstep. And all with splendid views from the rooms and suites on higher floors.

But this is more than a hotel, albeit an exemplary one which consistently sets the standards for service and sophistication. The heart of this home-that-is-a-hotel is the beguiling array of public rooms where entertainment and excellence merge seamlessly into each other. A cocktail at the bar, a star on the stage, an evening to remember – all as much part of The Carlyle as the sumptuous suites above.

Beyond the celebrated bar are other enticing spots for food and fun. We loved afternoon tea in the decadently-decorated Gallery but made sure to leave room for dinner in stylish Dowling’s restaurant. Best of all is Café Carlyle, an intimate supper club with classic cabaret performances from the likes of Alan Cumming or Rita Wilson. There’s never a dull moment at The Carlyle.

The place to be

Supple fingers tickle the ivories while expert hands craft cocktails. A film star here, a politician there, a hubbub of contented chatter. And you’re in the middle of it all, in the heart of Bemelmans Bar, which has been the place to be seen (and watched) for over 75 years. Its walls are decorated with imaginative drawings by Ludwig Bemelmans, creator of the Madeline children’s books.

New York can be tiring on your feet and tough on your body but The Carlyle has the ultimate antidote: the Valmont Spa. After a morning of shopping or before an evening of dining, this is the perfect place to relax and rejuvenate. From facials and wraps to couples massage and LED waterfalls, anything is possible. And even better, Valmont is a Swiss company. No wonder its treatments are so good.
